Guide: Writing Better Prompts

The single most important skill for working with AI is learning how to write a good prompt. A vague prompt leads to a vague result. A detailed prompt leads to a detailed result. This guide introduces the R-T-C-F framework—Role, Task, Context, and Format—to help you get exactly what you need from any AI tool.

The Problem with Vague Prompts

Most people start by giving the AI a simple command, like “write a blog post about productivity.” While the AI will generate something, it won’t be tailored to your audience, your brand, or your goals. It’s guessing. To get better results, you need to stop giving commands and start giving directions.

The R-T-C-F Framework

Think of every prompt as a creative brief for your AI assistant. It needs four key pieces of information to do its job well:

  • Role: Tell the AI who it should be. An expert copywriter? A friendly customer service agent? A technical analyst? This sets the tone and perspective.
  • Task: What, specifically, do you want the AI to do? Write? Summarize? Analyze? Brainstorm? Be as clear and direct as possible.
  • Context: Provide the necessary background information. Who is the audience? What is the goal? What key details should it know?
  • Format: Specify how you want the output. A bulleted list? A JSON object? A three-paragraph email? A table?

Example: Before

Let’s look at a typical, vague prompt:

Write a social media post about our new productivity app.

This will likely generate a generic, uninspired post that doesn’t match your brand’s voice or goals.

Example: After (Using R-T-C-F)

Now, let’s apply the framework for a much better result:

[Role] You are a witty and engaging social media marketer.

[Task] Write a short, exciting post for LinkedIn announcing the launch of our new app.

[Context] The app helps busy professionals block distractions and manage their tasks. The tone should be professional but not boring.

[Format] The post should be two paragraphs long, include 3-4 relevant hashtags, and end with a question to encourage engagement.

This detailed prompt gives the AI all the information it needs to generate content that is targeted, on-brand, and effective.
